Cleansing our digestive system once or twice a year is like getting an oil change. Think about that black gunky oil build up in your car. The same thing is happening in our bodies. Toxins build up for a variety of reasons - what we eat, medications, pollution, aging, the many substances we come in contact with throughout any given day. In the Ayurvdic world we call that build up Ama.
For optimal health we need to clean out the toxins (the Ama) at least once, if not twice a year so that we get a fresh start to get our digestive fire optimally functioning. Doing an Ayurvedic cleanse is easy, it's nourishing and it sets us on a clean, new road for the cold winter months when we need our digestive fire to be strong.
I LOVE Ayurveda - it is a practical, hand on ancient system, that makes sense and can change our lives slowly and steadily. Ayurveda gives us seasonal guidelines to promote health so that we can feel great to do the work in the world we're here to do. Check out some of the benefits of cleansing:

What DO I Get To Eat On This Cleanse?
One of the reasons I love Ayurvedic cleanses is because we DO get to eat, and the food is nourishing, even though a bit mono-flavored. For the week you'll have a main diet of Kitchari which is a slow cooked combination of rice, mung beans, ghee and vegetables. Some adjustments are made for each person depending on their Dosha (constitution). This is the main food for lunch and dinner. You'll be able to eat fruits, vegetables and for some you will have a breakfast of oatmeal with prunes and apples. So, here's the list for short hand:
Breakfast - warm fruit or oatmeal
Lunch & Dinner - kitchari
Snacks - fruits and vegetables, for some, nuts, and some special teas

Diane's Experience With Ayurveda
I was introduced to Ayurveda in 2002 in a yoga class, and was immediately fascinated. In 2007/2008 I began studying Ayurveda diligently because I wanted to help my husband, Erez who suffered from Asthma, skin allergies (scratching almost every day until he bled), digestive challenges, tiredness and sugar addiction. I knew he could feel so much better, so I went and got a Certificate in Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counseling from Mt. Madonna in California in 2008.
I was amazed by the power of the Ayurvedic. With the help of Triphala (which we will be using in this cleanse) Erez's digestive issues cleared up - which he'd had for years. He was then put on an herbal remedy for his skin allergies (which he suffered from his whole life), as well as changed his soap to an Ayurvedic soap, and slowly his allergies healed. It took a couple of years to heal, but now he can't even remember what that was like. He began to feel he had a lot more energy because his body wasn't in "fight" mode all of the time.
I've seen other students heal sugar addictions, lose weight, get regular sleep, clear up digestive issues - and all from simple lifestyle changes. The doorway into Ayurveda is the cleanse. I love this path because it gives us real tools to take care of our own health through food, lifestyle and exercise.
